What is ketosis?

Updated by Chrissy Rojas

Ketosis is a metabolic state that your body can enter when you're either fasting, eating a low-carb diet, or consuming drinkable ketones. In this state, your body burns ketones as well as fats and carbohydrates.

Being in ketosis means that you have elevated levels of ketones in your blood. You can estimate blood levels by measuring ketones in your breath or urine. However, the best way to know if you are in ketosis is to measure the levels of ketones in your blood.

  • No ketosis: under 0.5 millimolar (mmol) per liter (mmol/L)
  • Low ketosis: 0.5–1.5 mmol/L
  • Moderate ketosis: 1.5–3 mmol/L
  • High ketosis: over 3 mmol/L

You can get into ketosis by following a ketogenic diet (endogenous or nutritional ketosis) or by taking a drink like Ketone-IQ®(exogenous ketosis).
