H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester (D-BHB Ketone Monoester)

  • Acutely raises D-Betahydroxybutyrate to high levels (up to 3-6 mmol/L) within 30 minutes.
  • H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester delivers D-BHB without salt or acid load.
  • H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester is considered FDA Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use as a food.
  • H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester is not prohibited for use in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
  • With single doses of the D-BHB ester as a sports water, gastrointestinal (GI) side effects are rare. 
  • Published clinical evidence demonstrates efficacy for performance and/or recovery.
  • Distinct bitter taste.

Ketone Salts

  • Raises D-BHB up to ~1 mmol/L. 
  • Currently cheaper to produce than ketone esters. 
  • Many ketone salts contain an unnatural form of BHB (L-BHB), which can't be easily metabolized in the body. 
  • In order to raise blood BHB concentrations you have to consume a significant load of salt (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium) far in excess of the RDA of these substances. 
  • Moderate to high risk of GI symptoms at manufacturer's suggested doses.
  • Not FDA GRAS, therefore sold as a supplement rather than a food.

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT's)

  • Raises D-BHB blood levels up to ~0.5 mmol/L
  • Currently cheaper to produce than ketone esters. 
  • High amount of calories as fat, some of which your body converts to ketones.
  • The most ketogenic fat. Converts to ketones more rapidly than other fats, due to its "medium chain" chemical structure.
  • Some people report GI symptoms, especially if not used to medium chain triglyceride consumption.

Acetoacetate (AcAc) Diester

  • Mildly raises D-BHB to moderate levels (~1 mmol/L).
  • In current formulation, some report GI symptoms.
  • No improvement in performance (may be related to GI symptoms).
